The Defeat of the West │ Emmanuel Todd

Emmanuel Todd, historian, demographer, anthropologist, sociologist and political analyst, is part of a dying breed: one of the very few remaining exponents of old school French intelligentzia. Todd was the first Western intellectual, already in 1976, to have predicted the fall of the USSR in his book La Chute Finale (The Final Fall), with his research based on Soviet infant mortality rates [...] The first nugget concerning his latest book, La Défaite de l’Occident (The Defeat of the West) is the minor miracle of actually being published last week in France, right within the NATO sphere: a hand grenade of a book, by an independent thinker, based on facts and verified data, blowing up the whole Russophobia edifice erected around the 'aggression' by 'Tsar' Putin.

Behemoth, the land monster (land forces), and Leviathan, the sea monster (sea forces), killing each other.

Todd focuses on the key reasons that have led to the West’s downfall. Among them: the end of the nation-state; de-industrialization (which explains NATO’s deficit in producing weapons for Ukraine); the “degree zero” of the West’s religious matrix, Protestantism; the sharp increase of mortality rates in the US (much higher than in Russia), along with suicides and homicides; and the supremacy of an imperial nihilism expressed by the obsession with Forever Wars. Todd methodically analyses, in sequence, Russia, Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Germany, Britain, Scandinavia and finally The Empire. Let’s focus on what would be the 12 Greatest Hits of his remarkable exercise:

1. At the start of the Special Military Operation (SMO) in February 2022, the combined GDP of Russia and Belarus was only 3.3% of the combined West (in this case the NATO sphere plus Japan and South Korea). Todd is amazed how these 3.3% capable of producing more weapons than the whole Western colossus not only are winning the war but reducing dominant notions of the “neoliberal political economy” to shambles.
2. The “ideological solitude” and “ideological narcissism” of the West – incapable of understanding, for instance, how “the whole Muslim world seems to consider Russia as a partner rather than an adversary”.
3. Todd eschews the notion of “Weberian states” – evoking a delicious compatibility of vision between Putin and US realpolitik practitioner John Mearsheimer. Because they are forced to survive in an environment where only power relations matters, states are now acting as “Hobbesian agents.” And that brings us to the Russian notion of a nation-state, focused on “sovereignty”: the capacity of a state to independently define its internal and external policies, with no foreign interference whatsoever.
4. The implosion, step by step, of WASP culture, which led, “since the 1960s”, to “an empire deprived of a center and a project, an essentially military organism managed by a group without culture (in the anthropological sense)”. This is Todd defining the US neocons.
5. The US as a “post-imperial” entity: just a shell of military machinery deprived of an intelligence-driven culture, leading to “accentuated military expansion in a phase of massive contraction of its industrial base”. As Todd stresses, “modern war without industry is an oxymoron”.
6. The demographic trap: Todd shows how Washington strategists “forgot that a state whose population enjoys a high educational and technological level, even if it is decreasing, does not lose its military power”. That’s exactly the case of Russia during the Putin years.
7. Here we reach the crux of Todd’s argument: his post-Max Weber reinterpretation of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, published a little over a century ago, in 1904/1905: “If Protestantism was the matrix for the ascension of the West, its death, today, is the cause of the disintegration and defeat.” Todd clearly defines how the 1688 English 'Glorious Revolution', the 1776 American Declaration of Independence and the 1789 French Revolution were the true pillars of the liberal West. Consequently, an expanded 'West' is not historically 'liberal', because it also engineered “Italian fascism, German Nazism and Japanese militarism”. In a nutshell, Todd shows how Protestantism imposed universal literacy on the populations it controlled, “because all faithful must directly access the Holy Scriptures. A literate population is capable of economic and technological development. The Protestant religion modeled, by accident, a superior, efficient workforce.” And it is in this sense that Germany was “at the heart of Western development”, even if the Industrial Revolution took place in England. Todd’s key formulation is undisputable: “The crucial factor of the ascension of the West was Protestantism’s attachment to alphabetization.” Moreover Protestantism, Todd stresses, is twice at the heart of the history of the West: via the educational and economic drive - with fear of damnation and the need to feel chosen by God engendering a work ethic and a strong, collective morality - and via the idea that Men are unequal (remember the White Man’s Burden). The collapse of Protestantism could not but destroy the work ethic to the benefit of mass greed: that is, neoliberalism.
8. Todd’s sharp critique of the spirit of 1968 would merit a whole new book. He refers to “one of the great illusions of the 1960s – between Anglo-American sexual revolution and May 68 in France”; “to believe that the individual would be greater if freed from the collective”. That led to an inevitable debacle: “Now that we are free, en masse, from metaphysical beliefs, foundational and derived, communist, socialist or nationalist, we live the experience of the void.” And that’s how we became “a multitude of mimetic midgets who do not dare to think by themselves – but reveal themselves as capable of intolerance as the believers of ancient times.”
9. Todd’s brief analysis of the deeper meaning of transgenderism completely shatters the Church of Woke – from New York to the EU sphere, and will provoke serial fits of rage. He shows how transgenderism is “one of the flags of this nihilism that now defines the West, this drive to destroy, not just things and humans but reality.” And there’s an added analytical bonus: “The transgender ideology says that a man may become a woman, and a woman may become a man. This is a false affirmation, and in this sense, close to the theoretical heart of Western nihilism.” It gets worse, when it comes to the geopolitical ramifications. Todd establishes a playful mental and social connection between this cult of the fake and the Hegemon’s wobbly behavior in international relations. Example: the Iranian nuclear deal clinched under Obama becoming a hardcore sanctions regime under Trump. Todd: “American foreign policy is, in its own way, gender fluid.”
10. Europe’s “assisted suicide”. Todd reminds us how Europe at the start was the Franco-German couple. Then after the 2007/2008 financial crisis, that turned into “a patriarchic marriage, with Germany as a dominant spouse not listening to his companion anymore”. The EU abandoned any pretention of defending Europe’s interests - cutting itself off from energy and trade with its partner Russia and sanctioning itself. Todd identifies, correctly, the Paris-Berlin axis replaced by the London-Warsaw-Kiev axis: that was “the end of Europe as an autonomous geopolitical actor”. And that happened only 20 years after the joint opposition by France-Germany to the neocon war on Iraq.
11. Todd correctly defines NATO by plunging into “their unconscious”: “We note that its military, ideological and psychological mechanism does not exist to protect Western Europe, but to control it.”
12. In tandem with several analysts in Russia, China, Iran and among independents in Europe, Todd is sure that the US obsession – since the 1990s - to cut off Germany from Russia will lead to failure: “Sooner or later, they will collaborate”, as “their economic specializations define them as complementary”. The defeat in Ukraine will open the path, as a “gravitational force” reciprocally seduces Germany and Russia.

[...] Whatever the deadline, inbuilt in all this is a total Russia victory – with the winner dictating all terms. No negotiations, no ceasefire, no frozen conflict – as the Hegemon is now desperate spinning.

The West's Dystopia: War, Fragmentation, and Perversity | Emmanuel Todd

Trump’s perversity is unfolding in the Middle East, NATO’s warmongering in Europe. [...] Such is our world as we approach 2026. The dislocation of the West takes the form of a ‘hierarchical fracture’.

» One of the fundamental concepts of the West’s defeat is nihilism.  «

The United States is giving up control of Russia and, I increasingly believe, of China. Blockaded by China for its imports of samarium, a rare earth element essential to military aeronautics, the United States can no longer dream of confronting China militarily. The rest of the world – India, Brazil, the Arab world, Africa – is taking advantage of this and slipping away. But the United States is turning vigorously against its European and East Asian ‘allies’ in a final effort at overexploitation and, it must be admitted, out of sheer spite. To escape their humiliation, to hide their weakness from the world and from themselves, they are punishing Europe. The Empire is devouring itself. This is the meaning of the tariffs and forced investments imposed by Trump on Europeans, who have become colonial subjects in a shrinking empire rather than partners. The era of liberal democracies standing in solidarity is over.

[...] Cutting the European continent in half economically was an act of suicidal madness. [...] The rage resulting from defeat is leading each country to turn against those weaker than itself in order to vent its resentment. The United States is turning against Europe and Japan. France is reactivating its conflict with Algeria, its former colony. There is no doubt that Germany, which, from Scholz to Merz, has agreed to obey the United States, will turn its humiliation against its weaker European partners. My own country, France, seems to me to be the most threatened.

[...] One of the interesting features of America today is that its leaders are finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish between internal and external issues, despite MAGA’s attempt to stop immigration from the south with a wall. The army fires on boats leaving Venezuela, bombs Iran, enters the centres of Democratic cities in the United States, and sponsors the Israeli air force for an attack on Qatar, where there is a huge American base. Any science fiction reader will recognise in this disturbing list the beginnings of a descent into dystopia, that is, a negative world where power, fragmentation, hierarchy, violence, poverty and perversity intermingle.

So let us remain ourselves, outside America. Let us retain our perception of the inside and the outside, our sense of proportion, our contact with reality, our conception of what is right and beautiful. Let us not allow ourselves to be dragged into a headlong rush to war by our own European leaders, those privileged individuals lost in history, desperate at having been defeated, terrified at the idea of one day being judged by their peoples. And above all, above all, let us continue to reflect on the meaning of things.

(from the preface to the 2025 Slovenian publication of La Défaite de l'Occident)

"Russia Will Nuke Germany & UK if Ukraine War Persists" | Sergey Karaganov

"We are fighting Europe once again—the continent that has consistently been the source of all ills and evil in the history of humanity, including, of course, world wars, racism, and colonialism." Sergey Karaganov’s perspective on Europe and its relationship with Russia is defined by his belief in the urgent necessity of a definitive civilizational break from the West.

» The source of all ills and evil in the history of humanity. «
Zelensky, Starmer, Macron, and Merz coordinating their seizure of Russian assets, December 8, 2025.

He views the current conflict between the US-EU-NATO and Russia in Ukraine as a historical repetition, noting that "Europe has been several times invading us" and that "last time was in 1941–1945 when Western European countries came here under the banners of Hitler [Operation Barbarossa]." Karaganov asserts that "unbelievably after all their defeats they haven't learned the lesson" and "they are still pushing for a big war."

He warns that Europe’s "strategic parasitism" and "loss of the fear of God and nuclear war" make them "dangerous idiots that are pumping up hatred towards Russia like mad. Even in Hitler's Germany, the level of anti-Russian propaganda was maybe weaker than what is happening in Europe now." He argues that "they do not understand anything but physical pain," suggesting that Russia will be forced to "punish them severely" with "waves of nuclear strikes" should they continue fueling the war in Ukraine and threatening to directly attack Russia.

How far are we from Russia using nuclear weapons against Europe? "Two years, maybe one year. I've been calling on my government to escalate earlier. But President Putin is very religious and cautious." Karaganov specifies that "my choice would be Britain and Germany" and "Germany should be nuked first because it is the source of the worst in European history."

»
Germany should be nuked first because it is the worst. «
Sergey Karaganov, January 14, 2026.

"I beg the Almighty that won't happen. I have a lot of friends in Europe, but I have no contact with them because they are banned by their elites from talking to us. These elites are preparing them for war, though they cannot comprehend that if a real big war is unleashed, there will be nobody in Europe left to talk to. I pray that we won’t have to make this decision."

Regarding the decline of European elites, Karaganov argues that under its current leadership, Europe "became anti-European and even anti-human." He characterizes these leaders as "complete failures on all counts—moral, political, economic," and bluntly asserts that "Europe is going down." He further contends that "never in the history of Europe have we had such a low level of intellectual capacities in the leadership of most European countries," noting that while this applies to "not all but almost" every nation, the overall decline is undeniable.

» Micron keeps peddling this pathetic bullshit. This is what you’ll get. «

European elites "understand that their Golden Age is finished and they are desperate," primarily because they realized "they cannot live on others' money nor on the cushion of US protection any longer." Ultimately, he suggests that "everybody in the world now laughs at Europe," observing that a continent which "used to be one of the core centers of world power" has now been reduced to "a joke."

On the relationship between Russia and Europe, Karaganov believes "our European journey which Peter the Great started is over" and "it should have been over 150 years ago." He expresses a sense of liberation from Western influence, saying, "we are not European, thanks God" and "we are returning back to where we belong—to become the Eurasian nation... We have done away with "comprador" elites and thrown away the "fifth column." We are returning to our Russian soul. The only problem is that we have to pay for it with the lives of our best men. But other than that, Western sanctions have been a blessing. Russia, when threatened, is again a nation of warriors."

Russia and Western Man | Walter Schubart

Walter Schubart (1897–1942), a German jurist and cultural philosopher, occupied a singular position in the intellectual history of the mid-twentieth century. Forced to emigrate from Germany to Riga, Latvia, in 1933 to escape the rising tide of National Socialism, he experienced a profound cultural and spiritual transformation, eventually converting to Russian Orthodoxy and marrying a Russian woman. This intimate immersion into the Slavic spirit, combined with his academic post at the Latvian State University, allowed him to write with a depth that transcended mere observation, culminating in his 1938 masterpiece, "Russia and Western Man." Although he perished in a Soviet labor camp in 1942, his philosophy remains a cornerstone for understanding the metaphysical divide between the West and the East. In this work, Schubart presents a cultural-philosophical analysis based on "aeonic prototypes"—spiritual forms that determine the character of different eras—primarily contrasting the Promethean man of the West with the Messianic or Saintly man of the East.

»
Our destiny is universality, won not by the sword, but by the strength
of brotherhood and our fraternal aspiration to reunite mankind. «
Fyodor Dostoevsky, 1880.

The Messianic Soul and the Character of the Russian Man
Schubart characterizes the Russian soul through its inherent drive toward spiritual unity and the archetype of the Messianic man. Unlike the Westerner, the Russian finds their greatest happiness in sacrifice, perpetually striving toward an all-embracing unity that seeks to embody the concept of universal humanity in flesh and blood. This soul seeks not to complete itself or to take from others, but to give and to offer itself lavishly, aiming for the bliss of becoming immersed in the "All" (p. 182). This spiritual orientation is underpinned by a profound humility that the Western mind often confuses with humiliation. For the Russian, humility is an essential step toward freedom because it relates the individual to God, whereas the European, bound by earthly perceptions, sees it as the mark of a slave (p. 153).

Furthermore, the Russian’s relationship to time is dictated by a sense of eternity that precludes the frantic pace of the West. Because the Russian feels themselves to be an eternal being, they are never troubled by the consuming fear of missing out or the pressure of a daily workload; they believe they have unlimited time. This allows Russian life to flow leisurely in a state where the "pure present" belongs to the individual (p. 151). This internal landscape fosters a sense of brotherly love where humans are united by their shared humanity rather than by common political or economic aims. Schubart notes that while Europeans are united by common goals, Russians are united by their souls, serving their fellow men directly out of love rather than a cold sense of duty (p. 176).

»
Up to now, Europe has been Russia's misfortune—may the future prove Russia to be Europe's salvation! «
Walter Schubart (p. 275).

The Promethean Spirit and the Will of Western Man
In stark contrast, Schubart defines the Westerner as the Promethean man, an individual driven by a primitive fear that necessitates a will to power and the imposition of order upon a world viewed as chaos. For this heroic type, the world is a landscape into which it is his mission to bring form, and he himself supplies the universe with its only purpose (p. 14). To combat the internal specter of fear, the Promethean man relies on a domineering intellect that demands an icy clarity, treating emotions like well-behaved horses to be held in traces and refusing to tolerate daydreams or emotional suspension (p. 16).

This mindset views religious knowledge as a lower form of understanding and instead praises technology as the ultimate tool to eliminate chance and miracle from the world. Promethean man attempts to reduce the irrational to the comprehensive, seeking to fathom the secrets of nature primarily to rule the world. Consequently, generations have emerged in the West who are ashamed of the idea of God and regard the development of atheism as a sign of progress.

»
The Englishman desires to exploit his neighbor, the Frenchman to impress him,
the German to command him—only the Russian desires nothing from him. «
Walter Schubart (p. 299).

The Cultural Conflict and the End of the European Period
The conflict between these two types manifests in their fundamental goals for culture and society. While the final goal of Western culture is middle-class comfort and the regulation of the world through rigid legal systems, the Russian culture is driven by an urge to sacrifice itself in a final dramatic scene (p. 143, 191). The Russian perspective lacks a Western legal sense, viewing law as something that should eventually be rendered superfluous by religion—a concept that the modern Westerner, who has made an idol of the state, fails to comprehend (p. 191). Similarly, the concept of property differs; while the Westerner’s heart beats faster at the sight of his possessions, the Russian often suffers twinges of conscience, feeling that property owns the person rather than the person owning the property (p. 194).

Schubart argues that the "European period" in Russia, which began with Peter the Great’s attempts to impose Western rationalism and state supremacy over the Church, has finally reached its conclusion. He posits that the Bolshevik Revolution ironically accelerated this end by liquidating the social upper class that acted as the primary carrier for Western influence. By barricading Russia from Europe, the revolutionary era forced the nation back upon itself, marking the beginning of an "Asiatic era" where Russia is striving to overcome the influence of Promethean culture on its soil (p. 13-14). This shift represents a return to the Russian roots that had been suppressed for two centuries by a "Western crust."

»
The Russians, as indeed all Slavs, have the passion for freedom, not alone for freedom from the yoke of foreign domination,
but freedom from the fetters of all transitory things. Here, the breadth of soul with its famous Russian generosity, shows itself
and stands out conspicuously in contrast with the middling pettiness of the West, and particularly of the Germans. «
Walter Schubart (p. 81).

Russia as the Spiritual Salvation of the West
Schubart concludes his analysis with a vision of Russia acting as a spiritual salvation for a dying West. He asserts that the Western Promethean culture is in a state of terminal collapse, bearing the sign of death upon its brow as it sinks into a nihilistic abyss (p. 300). He believes that while Europe has been Russia’s misfortune in the past, the future may prove Russia to be Europe’s salvation as the "Man of the Millennium" is born from the synthesis of East and West (p. 300). The Russian mission, unlike the English national mission of world domination and practical aims, is one of redemption based on moral principles and the offering of a soul to a world that has become a spiritual desert (p. 219).

Ultimately, Schubart envisions the birth of a West-East world-culture that reconciles the organizational strength of the West with the spiritual depth of the East. He argues that the approaching collapse of Western culture is unavoidable, but that this destruction is merely the precursor to a resurrection. In his view, the twentieth century is an epoch of contradictions and decay, but also one of Messianic promise, where the Russian soul will provide the necessary spiritual renewal to save humanity from the mechanical void of Prometheanism (p. 299-300).
