Playing the Field: Lunar Effects on Mood and Biology | Michael Bevington

The debate about how far the Moon causes biological effects has continued for two millennia. Pliny the Elder argued for lunar power “penetrating all things”, including plants, fish, animals and humans. He also linked the Moon with tides, confirmed mathematically by Newton. 

 

 

A review of modern studies of biological effects, especially from plants and animals, confirms the pervasive nature of this lunar force. However calculations from physics and other arguments refute the supposed mechanisms of gravity and light. Recent space exploration allows a new approach with evidence of electromagnetic fields associated with the Earth’s magnetotail at full moon during the night, and similar, but more limited, effects from the Moon’s wake on the magnetosphere at new moon during the day. 

 

There is now evidence for mechanisms such as calcium flux, melatonin disruption, magnetite and cryptochromes. Both environmental and receptor variations explain confounding factors and inconsistencies in the evidence. Electromagnetic effects might also account for some evolutionary changes. Further research on lunar biological effects, such as acute myocardial infarction, could help the development of strategies to reduce adverse effects for people sensitive to geomagnetic disturbance. 

 

The Earth’s magnetosphere is formed by the Sun’s wind passing the Earth. It surrounds the Earth but is much larger on whichever part forms its local ‘shadow’ or ‘night’ side, where it forms a tail, or magnetotail. The magnetotail extends over 6,300,000 km. 

 

[...] Every month, at full moon, the Moon crosses the magnetotail for 6–7 days at about 348,000 km from the Earth. As revealed by recent space exploration, when the Moon traverses the magnetotail’s electromagnetic plasma sheet, it attracts a large electrical charge, thus disturbing the plasma sheet. Ions from the Moon’s surface transfer to the Earth’s magnetosphere. This in turn can influence the Earth’s electric and magnetic field by a form of magnetospheric feedback, since the thin current sheet of the magnetotail has an earthward electric field.

 

[...] The Moon affects the Earth’s magnetosphere differently at new moon compared with full moon. At new moon, on the Sun’s side of the Earth, the Moon does not cross through the magnetosphere. Instead its lunar wake, formed from the solar wind, is blown downstream towards the Earth’s magnetosphere in a relatively narrow pathway, but in a varied way because of the Sun’s 11-year sun-spot cycle and the Sun’s rotating magnetic field. The latter has two effects. Firstly, Earth experiences reversed solar polarity when crossing sectors in the interplanetary magnetic field, typically twice in about 27 days. Secondly, the solar wind travels in a spiral, so the lunar wake is not usually in direct alignment from the Sun. The new moon effect from the lunar wake on the Earth’s magnetosphere can be considered comparable to magnetotail effects at full moon, with evidence of electric fields, and magnetic fluctuations of up to 5 Hz from the plasma of the penumbra surrounding the lunar wake."

The greatest change in the electric field potential occurs as the moon crosses into and out of the magnetotail plasma, which occurs 2-3 days before the full moon and 3-4 days after the full moon.

Some of the reported effects of the full moon on animal and plant biology: tree diameter variation reflects a lunar rhythm; reproduction; changes in the stress hormone; epileptic seizures and unexpected deaths increase during full moon; increase of violent and acute behavioral disturbances during full moon, etc.

This SoLunar Map depicts the bias for short-term movements of stock indices two months ahead.
Of course financial markets are influenced also by other planetary forces, but a 3-5 day short-term
rhythm and pattern is governed by the SoLunar forces (= 4 highs and 4 lows per lunar month).
The soLunar forces are a composite of Sun-Moon angles, orbital eccentricities, declinations and some
long-term cycles. A Low in the SoLunar Map frequently is a High in the stock market and vice versa.
Inversions occur, and if so, they should occur only once every 4 lunar months around a New Moon (max
+/- 7 days). The SoLunar Rhythm is frequently disturbed by (1.) the FED, and (2.) by sudden solar
activity, altering the geomagnetic field, and hence the mass mood. This can result in the skip and/or
inversion of pivots in the SoLunar Map. An increasing number of sunspots and flares have usually a
negative influence on the stock market some 48 hours later, and vice versa (Ap values > 10 are usually
short-term negative). A rising blue line in the SoLunar Map means the bias for the market is side-ways-
to-up, and vice versa. Highs and lows in the SoLunar Map also may coincide with the start and
termination of complex, side-ways correction patterns like zig-zags, triangles or flags.
